Ergonomic Issues in System Configuration
Paul Anderson, University of Edinburgh

Reliably configuring a large computing infrastructure is a very difficult process. Many different people are likely to be involved, all with different skills, and all operating at different levels of abstraction. Current tools are targeted at specific tasks and classes of user. They do not interoperate well, and practical solutions involve a complex mixture of manual and automated procedures. In this talk, we will present an overview of the system configuration problem, and highlight the difficulties presented by this complex human interaction.

Paul Anderson is a researcher at the University of Edinburgh. He has a background in practical system administration and is particularly interested in specifying and implementing configurations for large computing infrastructures. Paul was programme chair for the 2007 LISA conference, and author of the SAGE booklets on System Configuration and the LCFG configuration tool. His homepage is http://homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk/dcspaul.
